If you're spending longer than a few days in Yakushima, or if you plan to do a traverse, this is the Mapple is the map to get, and you'll find it for sale in Anbo and Miyanoura. (Just be warned that not all of the trails are maintained nor accurate.)
If you're uncomfortable going on your own, or if you'd just like to learn more about the trail, consider hiring a guide. If you need gear like a sleeping bag, shoes, or rain gear, you can rent it in Yakushima.
Finally, the biggest dangers hikers face here are 1) getting lost and 2) getting trapped by water. Please bring full rain gear, head lamp, and a mobile phone in a ziplock bag. (Many hiking areas do not have phone service, but if you hike up high enough to see the ocean, you will often find service.)
